Or maybe you\u2019ve done that kind of job yourself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe gear is seriously heavy.\u201d<br>\u201cThank God for trolleys!\u201d<br>\u201cLoad-in and load-out feel like moving house.\u201d<br>\u201cIt\u2019s a maze backstage.\u201d<br>\u201cI spent hours folding and carrying chairs in a daze.\u201d<br>\u201cI kept clearing endless rows of plastic barriers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Anyone who has had even a small glimpse behind the scenes of a live show can probably imagine the huge amount of physical work involved before the stage is complete, and how everyone is usually sweating their way through before they even realize it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Protecting the venue floor.<br>Loading and unloading an endless amount of equipment.<br>Building the stage, then taking it all apart again after the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">What the audience sees is a finished stage and glamorous performance. But before that picture comes together, there is the huge job of transporting heavy equipment, building, protecting, and shaping everything within a limited amount of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tripleguns is an international live production company connecting Japan and the world. We support overseas concerts and world tours for Japanese artists, including local production management, venue coordination, and stage production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This time, we would like to focus on one part of live production that the general public often doesn\u2019t get to see: the sheer physical labour that goes into setting up a show, and what professionals are actually doing backstage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-ff92b9e250aaff5859b7b5fe44084a43\">Live production begins with trucking in the gear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A concert stage does not suddenly appear out of nowhere. They are professional truck drivers, but their role often goes far beyond simply driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Japanese trucking crews do not just deliver gear. They work closely with the setup team from the moment equipment is loaded into the truck, almost like a game of Tetris played perfectly, through to load-in at the venue and handover to the departments on site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are careful about protecting the equipment, careful about protecting the venue, strict about timing, and deeply proud of their truck, their cargo, and the work they do.<br><br>They are consummate craftsmen, and honestly, among the best in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, overseas, especially in Europe and North America, the exact same kind of role does not always exist in the same way. Of course there is trucking and transport, but the driver is often simply just the driver. It is much less common for them to be involved in the setup side as deeply as Japanese crews are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when Tripleguns takes Japanese artists overseas, one of the first and biggest examples of \u201ctranslating business culture\u201d happens right here. The casual unspoken teamwork that works with Japanese trucking crews often does not work in the same way with overseas drivers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-552d30df90e0d8e5f550fdd67774cb2c\">The grueling physical work of stagehands: overseas crews can look like a team of wrestlers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The people who physically move things forward on site are the stagehands. It can honestly feel like an entire team of fighters or professional wrestlers has turned up and started moving the equipment around at full speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">They work with incredible strength and at an amazing pace.<br>Heavy cases get lifted like they weigh nothing.<br>Complex stage structures are assembled in no time.<br>And during load-out, they can empty a venue with a speed that feels almost inhuman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">That is how much brute strength matters in this world. Without that raw human power, large-scale overseas stages simply would not get built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-1fe807962146db739056e5a8733968b7\">It\u2019s a chain reaction: one delay creates waiting time for everyone else<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">For the audience, a venue is something that is simply \u201cready\u201d when they arrive. But in reality, depending on the scale, setup often begins days in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">For a dome or stadium show, setup may begin five days before show day.<br>For an arena show, one or two days before.<br>For an outdoor festival, it can take more than ten days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">For just a few hours of performance, an enormous amount of physical labour goes into turning an empty space into a live environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The thing is, not every department can work freely at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If the overhead truss is not built yet, lighting cannot be rigged.<br>If the stage structure is not ready, the LED wall cannot be installed.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">So live setup is not a job where every team just does its own thing independently. It is a <strong>chain-reaction process<\/strong>, where the next step can only begin when the previous one is complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">One delay creates waiting time for another department. Within a limited timeframe, the team has to get the venue safely, accurately, and reliably into show-ready condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">That depends on two things: clear division of roles, and strong teamwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Who is responsible for what?<br>Which task needs to be prioritised right now?<br>Which department is waiting on which other department?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The better organised the site is, the less wasted movement there is, and the more effectively time can be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At Tripleguns, we always look at the whole picture and help create a workflow that allows each team to move smoothly without wasting time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A live show is never built by one person alone. It only becomes possible when many people are moving together in the same direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">And one point we really want to stress is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Without the part-time crew and casual labour teams, huge stages could never be completed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">They are the people physically carrying the enormous workload of the site: moving heavy equipment, laying protection, clearing barriers, loading out, and supporting the professional departments so that the entire process can keep moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the glamorous performance can begin, there is a huge, heavy, painstaking work built on real human effort that has to be done first.
