{"id":1765,"date":"2026-10-28T17:10:51","date_gmt":"2026-10-28T17:10:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tripleguns.com\/?p=1765"},"modified":"2026-10-29T09:29:06","modified_gmt":"2026-10-29T09:29:06","slug":"what_is_technical_rider","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tripleguns.com\/en\/blog\/what_is_technical_rider\/","title":{"rendered":"The Mysterious PDF That Arrives First for an Overseas Show: What Is a \u201cTechnical Rider\u201d?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Interpreting Actual Artist Riders from a Production Company\u2019s Perspective<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1672\" height=\"941\" src=\"https:\/\/tripleguns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/whatis_rider-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tripleguns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/whatis_rider-5.png 1672w, https:\/\/tripleguns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/whatis_rider-5-800x450.png 800w, https:\/\/tripleguns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/whatis_rider-5-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/tripleguns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/whatis_rider-5-1536x864.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1672px) 100vw, 1672px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Once an overseas show is confirmed, one of the first things that lands in the production team\u2019s inbox is a PDF file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it is only a few pages long.<br>Sometimes it runs to several dozen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open it up and you will find terms such as FOH, Monitor, Stage Plot, <br>Input List, Backline, Rigging, Power, and Local Crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For anyone seeing this for the first time, it can look almost like a secret code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This document is known as a <strong>Rider<\/strong>, or more specifically a <strong>Technical Rider<\/strong>, and it is an essential part of international live production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, it may look like little more than a list of equipment an artist wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But once you start working on international tours, you realise that a Technical Rider is much more interesting than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It tells you <strong>how an artist actually builds their live show<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also contains years of production experience accumulated across tens, sometimes hundreds, of performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article, we will look at publicly available riders from DJs, rock bands, jazz orchestras and world music artists, and explain what a production company actually looks for when reading them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The riders mentioned in this article are current or historical documents that have been made publicly available by artists or related organisations. visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201c10:A Concert Tour Does Not Run on Artists Alone\u201d \u2014 TRIPLEGUNS\" src=\"https:\/\/tripleguns.com\/en\/blog\/oveaseatour_crew_role\/embed\/#?secret=Z1CJcBwVjp#?secret=IqGpaqEeWv\" data-secret=\"IqGpaqEeWv\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\"><strong><strong>First of all, what is a Technical Rider?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Technical Rider is a document used by an artist to tell the promoter, venue and local production team:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis is the environment we need in order to make this show work.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exact contents vary widely between artists, but a rider may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Audio \/ PA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FOH<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitor \/ IEM<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Backline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lighting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Video \/ LED<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rigging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Power<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local Crew<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communication<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A small DJ show may only require a few pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A band rider may add a Stage Plot and Input List.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a large-scale tour, the document can expand to dozens of pages covering Video, Camera, Laser, SFX, Rigging, Crew and even the Production Schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The larger the production becomes, the more the Technical Rider stops looking like an \u201cequipment list\u201d and starts looking like a <strong>blueprint for reproducing the same show in another country and another venue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\"><strong>Do we simply provide everything written in the Rider?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is probably one of the easiest things to misunderstand when you first start reading Technical Riders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Not necessarily.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some requirements are absolutely essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But others come with different levels of priority:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>MUST:<\/strong> mandatory<br><strong>PREFERRED:<\/strong> the artist\u2019s preferred option<br><strong>ACCEPTABLE:<\/strong> an alternative that can be used<br><strong>SUBJECT TO APPROVAL:<\/strong> requires artist or production approval<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So not every line carries the same weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, imagine the audio requirement says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDiGiCo Quantum 338 Preferred.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The venue does not have a Q338. It only has another console.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not automatically mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to rent a Q338 or the show cannot happen!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first step is to ask the artist\u2019s FOH Engineer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe preferred console is not available. Would this alternative be acceptable?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, if the artist says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis console is required because our show file only works on this system.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">then the local production team may have to search very hard for that exact console.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading a Technical Rider thus requires skill and is not the same as ordering everything on the page like a shopping list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\"><strong>Once the Technical Rider arrives, the Advance begins<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image specifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venues normally have their own document summarising the equipment, stage and technical infrastructure available in-house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We call this the <strong>Venue Spec<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the Production Manager\u2019s main jobs is to work out how closely the Artist Rider matches what the venue can actually provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process, simplified, looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ARTIST RIDER<\/strong><br>\u2193<br><strong>VENUE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION<\/strong><br>\u2193<br><strong>CROSS-CHECK<\/strong><br>\u2193<br><strong>Does the venue have it?<\/strong><br>\u2193<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yes \u2192 Use the house equipment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No \u2192 Consider rental<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Different \u2192 Propose an alternative<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Physically impossible \u2192 Adjust the show design<\/strong><br>\u2193<br><strong>ADVANCE<\/strong><br>\u2193<br><strong>SHOW<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a major part of international live production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The artist has an ideal version of the show in mind.<br>The venue has its own reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Advance is the process of bridging the gap between the two.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that process is one of the Production Manager\u2019s core responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\"><strong>A Rider alone does not make a Package<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u25b6 Rider<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, we define what the artist requires.<br>What is actually needed for the performance?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u25b6 Venue Cross-check<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, the venue or local supplier replies with:<br>\u201cThis is what we have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We then compare that information with the Rider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u25b6 Open Items<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During production, there will always be things that are still unresolved.<br><br>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lighting Plot: TBA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Backline Substitute: under review<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Camera Layout: TBC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rigging Plan: waiting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Managing <strong>what has not yet been decided<\/strong> is extremely important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So is sharing updated information and making sure nobody continues working from an old version of a document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Show Day approaches, the aim is to remove the unknowns one by one until everything is clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is also part of the Production Manager\u2019s job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u25b6 Approval Log<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This final part is surprisingly important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House console is SD12 instead of Q338.<br>Approved by FOH Engineer on 15 Sep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, keep a record of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who approved what, and when?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the worst conversations to have on Show Day is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNobody told me about this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho approved this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a large international project involving specialists from many different countries, an Approval Log is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\"><strong><strong>A Rider is the \u201cblood, sweat and tears\u201d of a touring band<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you first read a Technical Rider, you may wonder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy is this so detailed?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But once you compare several riders, your perspective starts to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of those seemingly minor requirements are the result of improvements made by artists and touring crews from the experience they\u2019ve gained over tens or hundreds of shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe there was not enough equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the wrong console arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the band could not hear properly on stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe load-in took much longer than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the musicians\u2019 faces were not properly lit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Successes and failures like these can happen in cities all over the world at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNext time, let\u2019s put that in the Rider.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why I think a Technical Rider is, in a way, <strong>the blood, sweat and tears of a touring band<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\"><strong><strong>So what do artists actually ask for in their Riders?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking at publicly available riders, the priorities can be completely different depending on the genre<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-background\"><strong>\u25b6 DJ | Four CDJs are not enough<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"798\" height=\"637\" src=\"https:\/\/tripleguns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Electronic-Artist\u300cno_ip\u300d.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the publicly available Technical Rider for electronic artist <strong>no_ip<\/strong>, the artist requests:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Four Pioneer CDJ-3000 or CDJ-2000NXS2 players<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pioneer DJM-V10<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Booth monitors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dskonnect.com\/doc\/technicalrider-no-ip.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">https:\/\/dskonnect.com\/doc\/technicalrider-no-ip.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is interesting is that the Rider does not simply say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFour CDJs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It specifically requires them to be <strong>LINKED<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The booth monitors also need to be positioned to the left and right of the artist, at or above shoulder height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there is not enough low-end in the booth, an additional booth subwoofer should be provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So:\u201cYes, we have CDJs.\u201d\u3000is not enough for the artist\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rider also defines <strong>how those CDJs need to be set up and ready to use<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-background\">\u25b6<strong><strong>Rock Band | A more expensive piece of equipment is not automatically a better substitute<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"894\" height=\"894\" height=\"386\" src=\"https:\/\/tripleguns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/warsaw_village_band.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1703\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On stage you find traditional instruments such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Violin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hurdy Gurdy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dulcimer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p Wing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rider states that their presets are carried on USB and that the performance can only be run on this mixer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wireless IEM<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A router covering the whole stage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An app allowing musicians want<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\"><strong><strong>So, read the Rider properly<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most dangerous things you can say in production is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIt should be fine. We\u2019ve always done it this way.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Pioneer model is basically the same.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis console is more expensive, so it must be better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA bass amp is a bass amp.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe venue already has lights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you skim the Rider, you may completely miss the reason the artist spent years building that requirement into their touring system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you cannot provide something, ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the equipment is different, propose an alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Get approval from the artist\u2019s side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try to understand <strong>why the class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Rider is an artist\u2019s list of requirements, and there is another side of the Rider world that often receives a lot of public attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Hospitality Rider<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1672\" height=\"941\" Fighters\uff5c<strong>A 52-page Rider featuring a food colouring book<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foo Fighters\u2019 2011 Tour Rider is an incredible <strong>52 pages long<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure Pages\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">which is basically a catering guide disguised as a colouring and activity book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pages were created by Tour Manager Gus Brandt, and The Smoking Gun described it as one of the most entertaining riders it had ever seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the content is wonderfully chaotic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It begins with an illustration of Dave Grohl holding a knife and fork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nate Mendel explains what makes a good breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taylor Hawkins explains the difference between a <strong>good salad and a bad salad<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chris Shiflett appears in a maze where the reader has to help him reach proper catering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pat Smear teaches us that <strong>\u201csweaty meats\u201d are not acceptable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are quizzes about what belongs in a salad, a word search, and even pages devoted to discussing the difference between <strong>good ice and bad ice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, completely unrelated to live production, the Rider also includes comments about how unfair it was that Chewbacca did not receive a medal at the end of <em>Star Wars<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a 52-page production document, it sometimes feels less like paperwork and more like <strong>Foo Fighters\u2019 entire personality turned into a PDF<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dave Grohl explained at the time that one of the most important things was simply making sure the crew was properly fed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crew members might arrive at the venue at around 7am and still be working at 2am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So in many ways, the Catering Rider was there more for the crew than for the band themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind all the jokes is a very serious message:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Eat properly, survive a very long day, and make a great show.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is something genuinely lovely about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japanese Riders and production documents tend to prioritise accuracy and efficiency, so they are often written in a very practical style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foo Fighters took a different approach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Communicate what is needed properly.<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><strong>But make the person reading it enjoy the process too.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is surprisingly unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personally, if I read this Rider before hearing the band play, I would probably already be thinking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI like these people.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-background\"><strong><strong>Van Halen | \u201cNo brown M&amp;M\u2019s\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most famous Hospitality Rider story of all belongs to <strong>Van Halen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their Rider in the 1980s genuinely contained a clause that essentially said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Provide M&amp;M\u2019s, but remove all the brown ones.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/arts-culture\/why-did-van-halen-demand-concert-venues-remove-brown-mms-from-the-menu-180982570\">https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/arts-culture\/why-did-van-halen-demand-concert-venues-remove-brown-mms-from-the-menu-180982570<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, Van Halen\u2019s productions used huge quantities of heavy lighting and audio equipment, as well as specialised staging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venue load limits, power requirements and voltage specifications had to be followed correctly, otherwise there was a genuine risk of serious accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David Lee Roth later explained that if the band found brown M&amp;M\u2019s backstage, it could be a sign that the promoter or venue had not properly read the contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if they had missed the M&amp;M clause, there was a chance that they had also missed something much more important, such as structural loads or electrical requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that sense, a bowl containing brown M&amp;M\u2019s could be a sign that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThey may not have read the rest of the Technical Requirements either.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether every detail of the story developed exactly as the legend now tells it is another discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the fact that it remains one of the most famous Rider stories ever told says a lot about how important these documents are in touring culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\"><strong><strong>If a requirement looks strange, first ask why it exists<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it is a Technical Rider or Hospitality Rider, there will sometimes be a line that makes you think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo they really need to specify that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But behind that one sentence may be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A previous production problem<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Artist or crew health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Show File<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A sponsorship contract<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The artist\u2019s performance method<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A problem that happened at another venue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There may be a reason that is invisible to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\"><strong>A Technical Rider is not the answer.
